AI growth outpaces Moore’s Law, soaring beyond traditional limits

Research shows that AI computational power has doubled every 3.4 months since 2012, compared to the two-year cycle defined by Moore’s Law.

This accelerated pace breaks from traditional computing’s predictable path. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang characterized AI’s progression as closer to “Moore’s Law squared.”

Practically, AI has advanced approximately 100,000x within a decade, a pace dramatically surpassing the 100x improvement predicted by Moore’s Law. Such exponential acceleration emphasizes AI’s unique growth trajectory.

The transition from CPUs to GPUs, Language Processing Units (LPUs), and tensor processing units (TPUs) has notably accelerated AI advancements. GPUs, LPUs, and TPUs provide significant performance enhancements tailored explicitly for AI workloads.

Nvidia’s newest data center reportedly outperforms prior generations by over 30x in AI inference workloads.

Innovations in chip architecture, such as 3D stacking and chiplet-based designs, have further boosted performance beyond transistor scaling alone, overcoming the inherent physical limits of traditional two-dimensional semiconductor structures.

However, unlike Moore’s Law, which is constrained by inherent physical limitations, AI’s trajectory has not yet been materially restricted by physical boundaries. Moore’s Law traditionally hinges on transistor density, shrinking to the point where quantum tunneling imposes strict operational limits at roughly 5nm.

Conversely, AI can capitalize on non-hardware avenues, including algorithmic refinements, extensive data availability, and substantial investment, providing multiple dimensions for continuous advancement.

Economically, AI’s rapid improvements translate into significant cost reductions. Training an image recognition AI to 93% accuracy decreased from approximately $2,323 in 2017 to just over $12 in 2018. Similarly, training time and inference speeds have improved dramatically, reinforcing AI’s practical efficiency and viability across sectors.

Does Moore’s Law apply to AI?

Viewing AI growth purely through Moore’s Law obviously has limitations. AI development involves complex scaling behaviors distinct from semiconductor advancements.

However, despite the exponential increase in computational power, achieving equivalent performance gains in AI demands disproportionate computational resources. The required computing resources can grow sixteen-fold to yield merely a twofold improvement in AI capabilities, suggesting diminishing returns even amid exponential hardware progression.

This complexity highlights the inadequacy of Moore’s Law alone as a predictive measure for AI growth. Traditional computing faces definitive physical barriers, prompting the semiconductor industry to embrace 3D chip stacking, chiplet architectures, and modular designs, attempting to extend Moore’s Law despite mounting manufacturing complexity and cost, per Sidecar AI.

In contrast, AI remains relatively unencumbered by such hard physical limits, benefiting instead from continuous innovation across software, data management, and specialized hardware architecture. AI’s limitation is more based on supply and demand for hardware resources than its development and innovation.

Thus, while the common narrative is that energy and GPU availability limit AI development, the data speaks for itself. AI computing development surpasses traditional computing, and those developing frontier AI have the capital to deploy the required hardware.

Moore’s Law was used to showcase how rapid the speed of computing innovation was. Home computers, for example, exploded from X86 processors in the early 90s to the soaring multicore M-series Apple chips and beyond within three decades.

If AI is progressing magnitudes faster than traditional computing did over the past 30 years, one can only speculate where it will be by 2055.
